Warts result when skin cells grow abnormally fast due to infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). About 10 of the 150 HPV strains cause skin warts. While certain other strains cause sexually transmitted anal warts and genital warts, some of which have been implicated in cervical cancers and other genital cancers, the strains that cause common skin warts have rarely been linked to cancer. Even so, they can be unsightly and may even cause pain, as is the case with plantar warts on the bottom of the feet. While over-the-counter treatments that include salicylic acid may effectively remove warts, treatment may take 12 weeks. As an alternative, the dermatologist can freeze the wart with liquid nitrogen in 3-4 sessions.

Warts are a common skin condition. They most often appear on the hands and fingers. Picking a wart can cause it to spread to other areas of the skin.
