Alopecia causes hair loss in small round patches that may go away on their own, or may last for many years. Some people may lose all scalp hair and body hair. Experts do not know why the immune system, attacks the hair follicles, which is where hair growth begins.

Alopecia is not contagious, it occurs in both genders and in every ethnic group. One in five persons with alopecia has a family member who also has the disease.

The treatments for Alopecia are not a cure. While treatments may promote hair growth, new patches of hair loss may continue to appear.
