PSORIASIS’ LINK WITH DIABETES

In addition to dealing with chronically irritated patches of flaky skin, those suffering from psoriasis should be aware that they may be at risk for another chronic disease. According to new research, there is a strong correlation between psoriasis and type-2 diabetes. Both diseases are triggered by inflammation. In this case, the same cells that trigger the inflammation of psoriasis are also linked with insulin resistance and type-2 diabetes. Moreover, there may be a connection between other inflammation-sensitive conditions such as arthritis and cardiovascular disease. With all this in mind, dermatologists are likely to recommend that their psoriasis patients also be screened for cardiovascular risk factors including obesity, hypertension, high blood cholesterol, and type-2 diabetes or insulin resistance.

MOTHERS WHO TAN THEIR DAUGHTERS’ HIDES

A recent small study provides some new insight into the tanning salon culture. According to the survey of over 200 young women between the ages of 18 and 30 years, nearly four women in ten said that their first experience with indoor tanning was with their mothers. In addition, these girls began tanning indoors two years earlier (14 instead of 16) than the others in the study and were almost five times more likely to be “heavy tanners” when they became college students. Of course, dermatologists would prefer that mothers better exert the considerable influence they have over their young daughters by directing them away from activities that promote skin wrinkling and skin cancer toward healthier endeavors, such as exercise.

Tanning beds and unprotected exposure to the sun can also lead to premature wrinkles and age spots. Seek guidance from your dermatologist regarding safe tanning alternatives. For additional information about skin cancer and its signs and symptoms, call ELMHURST DERMATOLOGY at 630-832-2111. P.S. In 2009, the World Health Organization declared that tanning beds and ultraviolet radiation are among the leading cancer risks, as deadly as cigarettes.
